MassARRAY

At CIGENE, the Sequenom MassARRAY system has been used extensively for genotyping projects, and over the last four years we have built a strong foundation with this technology. Today we routinely use the iPLEX Gold technology and are running up to 34 plexes with high quality and confidence.

The Sequenom MassARRAY system utilizes a MALDI-TOF (Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization - time of flight) mass spectrometry for genotyping. MassARRAY (MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry)Essentially this technology is based on an allele-specific primer extension reaction where short primers are extended, according to the base composition in the template sequence, and separated by mass (see e.g. N. Storm et al. 2003. Methods Mol.Biol., 212 p.241-262.). Differences in mass are automatically translated by the software into specific genotype calls.

Our service includes primer and assay design all the way through to production of genotypes. All steps are automated using specialized equipment such as a Beckman Biomek Fx pipetting robot, a Beckman Multimek96 pipetting robot, a nano-dispenser chip-printing robot, a mass spectrometer, and a LIMS system etc. We typically multiplex at a level of 25 to 29 (depending on the project).
