Degrees and honours: M.Sc. in biochemistry (1971) and Dr. Techn. in chemometrics (1985) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Member of the Norwegian academy of technical sciences. Honorary member of The Norwegian chemometrics society under the Norwegian chemical society; Herman Wold gold medal from the Swedish chemical society. Chemometrics prize, Eastern Analytical 1999.

Functional protein chemistry: Methods to measure protein denaturation in intact samples (thermal analysis), and their consequences (rheology and sensory analysis) (1974-1983).
Chemometrics and statistics: Active from 1972 and onwards; several books on the subject, including Martens & Næs (1989) Multivariate calibration (Wiley, current citation index: >2500). Co-inventor of several well known methods, including Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) (1983) and its jack-knife validation (2001), Multiplicative Signal Correction (MSC 1983) and Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction (EMSC 1999). Co-inventor of dual-domain soft modeling IDLE method for compression of video sequences (1989-91). Co-developer of pixel-based analysis methods for 2DGE proteomics data (1989-.) Theoretical biology: Multivariate detection and inspection of chaotic processes in high-dimensional non-linear dynamic models mathematical models (1992). Explorative analysis of complex high-dimensional non-linear dynamic models of cell differentiation (2006-.). Statistically designed computer simulation studies (2006-.). Relevant recent activity: Works presently as cross-disciplinary “libro” at several institutions at Campus Ås, based on UMB/CIGENE and Nofima Mat employment. Present research activities include:
A) Soft modeling of hard models –“ modellometrics”: The use of experimental design and multivariate bilinear modeling for capturing high-dimensional non-linear dynamic models: A meeting of different cultures for using mathematics. Mathematical problem reduction and validation, data-driven self-modelling, overview of causally-cohesive genotype-phenotype relationships, methods for comparing alternative mathematical models.
B) Bio-chemometrics applications functional genomics: Calibration and use of high-dimensional FTIR measurements in milk, for determination of fatty acid profile and other quality parameters in animal breeding and in genetics. Multi-trait genomics modeling.
C) Bio-chemometrics method improvement: validation, heterogeneity, nonlinearity, cross-disciplinary integration etc. Separation of different physical and chemical sources of variation in multi-channel measurements by model-based preprocessing. Improved statistical validation for multivariate methods (PLSR, EMSC etc). Chemometric modelling in genetics. Domain-transforms for efficient extraction of covariation from DNA sequence data. Data modeling in proteomics, functional genomics and biospectroscopy. Time-lapse imaging of living systems. Improved teaching of data analysis to bioscientists.
