CIGENE lecture: SciCraft and Octave - Open source solutions for chemometrics and bioinformatics

Time: Friday 13 February, 1415 - 1500

Place: Agricultural University of Norway - NLH, Ås, Animal Science Building, meeting room 2nd floor

Speaker: Prof. Bjørn Kåre Alsberg, NTNU

Bjørn Kåre Alsberg, professor of chemometrics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, will give a talk entitled

SciCraft and Octave: Open-source solutions for chemometrics and bioinformatics

The talk will present the current development and future plans for the programs SciCraft and Octave. SciCraft provides easy access to advanced data analysis methods in an intuitive way. Central to the software is a visual programming environment where the data analysis pipeline is controlled by diagrams. The diagrams are connected nodes, where the nodes represent methods (or operators) and the connectors indicate the data flow. An important advantage of SciCraft is its seamless integration of methods written in different computer languages through the use of plugins. Important languages for rapid access to new data analytical methods are Octave, R and Python. Octave is an open source Matlab clone which enables the SciCraft user to access a wide range of Matlab software directly. As Octave is not fully compatible with Matlab, it is necessary to improve this software. A major feature missing in the current Octave version is Handle Graphics in Matlab. Our group is therefore currently involved in the construction of a Handle Graphics clone for Octave.
