Postdoctoral fellow/Research scientist - Bioinformatics/statistics

The Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE), hosted by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), is inviting applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship/research position, to work as part of a team on the project "An integrative genomics approach to identify genes and biochemical pathways underlying complex traits in Atlantic salmon".

The project is a "Knowledge-building Project with User Involvement" (KMB), involving collaboration with the two major Norwegian breeding companies for salmon and swine, AquaGen and Norsvin. The project will also extend the productive international collaborations that exists between CIGENE and the world-leading salmon functional genomics labs in Canada (Simon Fraser University and University of Victoria), USA (Human Genome Sequencing Centre, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM-HGSC), Houston, Texas), Australia (DPI, Melbourne) and Sweden (Uppsala University BMC).

The candidate's work in the project will mainly involve 1) identification of a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Atlantic salmon and pig using the new generation of highly parallel sequencing technologies (454, Solexa or Solid technologies), and 2) utilisation of high-density SNP maps and high-resolution expression data in an integrative genomics approach (eQTL) to identify genes and biochemical pathways underlying economically important complex traits in farmed Atlantic salmon.

Candidates should have an educational background in molecular genetics, bioinformatics or statistics. Applicants must have successfully completed their doctoral degree. We expect candidates to be highly skilled in their field, self-motivated, eager to take the initiative, in possession of good interpersonal skills and willing to work in close collaboration with others.

Annual salary ranges from level 57 to 65 on the Norwegian Government salary scale (approximately NOK 416,300 to 483,100), depending on qualifications. The position is located at CIGENE's premises at UMB.

Applicants should submit three copies of their written application, detailed CV including a list of publications and copies of certificates and references. Three copies of the applicant's most important publications should also be included. Applications quoting reference number 08/550 should be sent to: UMB, Dept. of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences, P O Box 5003, N-1432 Aas, Norway by 30 May 2008.
